A new fertility indicator can pinpoint peak baby-making days.
By Alison Northey

The new Luna Fertility Indicator is a home test that allows women to determine the best time for conception. No larger than a lipstick case, it consists of an acrylic slide, a tiny, powerful microscope, a focus and a handle.

All you need to do is lick the slide, let dry (about 10 minutes) and then hold it up to the light. The crystal patterns reveal whether or not you are fertile at the time. If you’re ovulating or approaching ovulation, you’ll see a fern-like pattern appear. A simple dot-like pattern, which appears most days during your cycle, indicates infertility. Organized lines appearing to form rows is an indication of pre-ovulation.

The concept behind the Luna Fertility Indictor has been in use in Europe for some time and has been tested extensively for safety and accuracy. In March, the Luna, which was developed by a New Westminster company, was approved as a medical device by Health Canada.

Quite simply, a woman’s body fluids reflect the changes in hormone levels during different phases of the fertility cycle. When the dried fluids are viewed through a powerful magnifier they reveal the stage of the cycle through the patterns in the crystals. When used and interpreted correctly, the Luna claims to be 97 percent effective in determining the time of ovulation. For best results, use the Luna first thing in the morning prior to brushing your teeth. Do not consume water, alcohol, sugar, food or cigarettes for two hours prior to taking the test. Your results may be affected causing false positives.

The Luna sells for $64.95 plus tax. For about $6 a year, you could have a safe, non-invasive fertility predictor – a valuable tool if you’re trying to get pregnant or looking to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.
